Who We Are (And Why)
This blog was created by Debbie Shew, Canon for Community Ministries in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, in the wake of the earthquake(s) that decimated key parts of Haiti in January 2010. It is intended to be an online “gathering space” for people from across the diocese who have a particular interest in Haiti, serving initially as a place to share information any of us find about the well-being of beloved companions, the state of institutions we’ve worked with and, most importantly, the most effective ways to assist. It will also be a resource for linking to others interested in Haiti beyond the diocese, as well as a place to post articles of interest, photos and so on.
I hope you’ll participate actively and will share information, prayer requests and ideas regularly! Please invite any others you know who might find this “place” helpful or comforting in any way.
We have just returned from our 6-day trip to Hiati. It’s almost like a dream, since I cannot get the images out of my mind. May God bless the people of Haiti; send them his love for a long and enduring season. The people need our help, now, if never. The children: innocent, helpless, but beautiful in every sense, need food, nutrition, medical care, a home, love and affection. You have all seen the devastation on TV, but it’s another experience to witness this in person. But the people of Haiti live on. In our “Army Tent” community, volunteers from around the world and basic accomodations, I could hear the songs of praise each morning about 5:30 a.m. coming from the Hostel across from the crowded Hospital. Meanwhile, hundreds of patients would begin to form the line for medical care, which would not begin until 8:30 a.m. Yes, they wait and patiently; for this is their only opportunity to get help. We plan to share our story on Sunday, Feb 14, St Timothy’s Episcopal, Decatur, 30034.
